Introduction

The UK VAT Calculator helps separate net price, VAT amount, and gross price without manual spreadsheet formulas. It is intended for invoice checks, quotes, product pricing, expense reviews, and everyday decisions where VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive figures need to be compared clearly.

About this vat calculator

VAT calculations can be confusing because adding VAT and removing VAT are not mirror-image percentage steps. Adding 20% to a net amount multiplies by 1.20, while removing VAT from a gross amount divides by 1.20. Showing all three amounts together reduces mistakes when checking supplier paperwork, customer prices, or receipts.

How this tool works

Select the VAT rate, enter the amount, and choose whether the amount is net or gross. The calculator then applies the correct add or remove formula and rounds the result to two decimal places for currency use. If a rate is reduced or zero-rated, choose that rate before calculating.

  1. Choose the VAT rate that applies to the goods or service.
  2. Enter the amount and select whether you want to add VAT or remove VAT.
  3. Review the net amount, VAT amount, and gross amount in the result panel.

When to use this tool

Use it for quick arithmetic, not for deciding whether something is taxable. VAT liability, exemptions, registration requirements, and partial-exemption scenarios can be complex. For official filing, unusual goods or services, or cross-border transactions, verify the treatment with HMRC guidance or an accountant.

  • Checking supplier quotes, invoices, receipts, or product prices.
  • Preparing estimates where you need to show VAT separately.
  • Comparing VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive amounts before making a purchase decision.
